Gums’N’Slimming… Is It Possible to Lose Weight With a Gum?

Functional gum is another means that blew up the market of anti-obesity agents. Why spend money on expensive fat burners and wince at the taste of strange exotic plants, if you can simply without much hassle…. chew their extracts and become slimmer! Is it really possible to replace diet and sports with methodical jaws movements? We give the word to the science, practitioners and common sense.

Chewing gum, chewing gum all day long…

Diet Gum, Slim Gum, Chew Away Gum, Reducta… Sounds like a mysterious spell! All these beautiful names have one tempting promise in common.

The sellers of the chewing gum for weight loss assure that their product will help you lose 3 kilos weekly.

At that, all you need are two efforts that have nothing to with tedious fitness:

  • You open your wallet
  • You thoughtfully move your jaws.

Is it not an extremely attractive prospect?

In the presentation of its distributors, the benefit of the gum for body shape looks quite a certain one:

  • Gum discourages the appetite
  • Has no calories.

But the main hopes come for all sorts of useful extracts:

  • African mango
  • Goji berries
  • Garcinia cambogia
  • Green coffee.

These are claimed to “boost metabolism”, “stimulate the thyroid gland to work,” and even “burn fat”.

A frequent visitor to the gum composition is L-carnitine, which through “marketing buzz” transformed from a useful substances for athletes into a universal slimming pill.

The main charm of extracts from miraculous plants as part of gum for weight loss lies in the fact that you don’t even have to eat the exotic foods, dooming yourself to digesting any extra protein, fat, and carbs.

You chew, and all the concentrated usefulness of chewing gum with the saliva you produce is sent directly into the body, kilos melt away.

However, this is just in theory.

And what about the practice?

A lot of gums about nothing

In practice, the distribution scheme of gum for weight loss already brings enough issues to raise the temptation comparing it with a bright and spectacular bubble of bubble gum.

Functional gum is a typical product of multi-level marketing:

  • remote sales,
  • hypnotically bright advertising,
  • reviews of happy people who managed to lose weight with it,
    dizzying promise,
  • phone operators that possess the techniques of “fishing with live bait”: “If you place an order only for one pack, you will become the proud owner of five packs (and a bonus feeling of conviction that you saved a huge amount of money!)”.
  • Chewing gum for weight loss, by the good tradition, is advertised as a “weight loss secret of celebrities”, “expert opinions of doctors” about its benefits are here and there on the seller’s website.

Yet, there are several “buts”:

  • photos of these ”doctors” are not real,
  • medical and scientific institutions specified do not exist,
    fictitious positions.

Chew through it and get over it?

None of the miracle anti-obesity tools, declared in the composition of the chewing gum, which can help you “chew on” the excess weight, has any proven effect.

On the contrary – honest doctors urge to be wary of any newfangled products that “burn fat”.

At best, the roots and powders have a certain reserve of nutrients and rare minerals (which, however, have no effect on body fat), at worst – they can cause allergic or other adverse reactions.

It is also not clear, in what form these products with all their vast and diverse usefulness managed to fit inside a small gum.

In addition, the very form of chewing gum is not so harmless. Recently, a study was published in the journal Eating Behaviors about the effect of chewing gum over eating behavior, the results of which set us thinking.

Chewing gum both fruit and mint does not extinguish hunger.

It intensifies it, especially if it you are using it to cheat and skip a meal.
In this case, the desires of your stomach may become truly irresistible.
This is due to the fact that gum comprises a distinct synthetic flavoring component. Even if its sweetness is provided by a sweetener, the level of insulin increases, which triggers appetite boost and fat depositing.

Chewing gum increases the craving for fast food and simple carbs. At that, the more intense mint flavor the chewing gum has, the more vivid dreams of bakery you have.

During the experiments, it was found out that volunteers, who used chewing gum to lose weight, really did reduce the number of meals and were skipping snacks without any difficulty.

Yet, their lunch and dinner volumes increased. As a result, their daily caloric value did not decrease at all. In fact, it even increased.

Flavors, identical to natural, in chewing gum discourage the desire to choose vegetables and fruit. Thus, your menu is undergoing a qualitative change, which certainly doesn’t benefit your health.

In addition to the fact that chewing gum for weight loss may provoke the craving for junk food and eating less plant foods, more physiological side effects of its use were already proven.

These include:

  • Provocation of the temporomandibular joint dysfunction (pain in the ears and chewing area due to subluxation of the lower jaw bone)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, caused by swallowing air during intensive chewing and laxative effect of artificial sweeteners.
  • Chewing gum for weight loss: reviews of doctors
    – To start losing weight with a chewing gum is just silly. It can neither suppress appetite, or affect the amount of food eaten.

On the contrary, it often stimulates hunger.

  • Chewing gum and chewing process stimulate the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and increase the production of digestive juices, in particular, gastric juice.

If it happens on an empty stomach, it may cause damage to the gastric mucosa, duodenal ulcers, gastritis, or exacerbate gastroduodenitis.

Yet, you can chew gum after a meal.

It is very useful, since it improves nutrient absorption. However, you should not abuse the chewing duration and the amount of chewing gum.
You can only chew gum to refresh your mouth.

You should chew be no more than ten minutes after a meal. In other cases, chewing gum simply has no beneficial effect. Moreover, it can never replace food.

  • Chewing any “pseudo-food” can slow down the metabolism.

Chewing gum promotes the release of large amounts of insulin by the pancreas, which results in a sharp decrease in lipolysis during the day. Thus, everything you eat can “go into fat”.

Sweeteners in chewing gum are not safe for your health.

Abuse of artificial sweeteners can also affect the perception of ordinary food by your oral receptors. Food may seem tasteless, uninteresting, and not satiating. As a result, the person risks to eat larger amounts of spices, salt, which leads to a change in metabolism, and, consequently, to weight gain.

Do not forget about the increased appetite.

If the stomach is empty, and the person stimulates the production of gastric juice with a chewing gum at the receptor level, the mucosa of the stomach begins producing a large amount of hunger hormone – ghrelin. Thus, your only enhance you appetite.
